Kitten care 101

5 steps to start your kitten down a happy, healthy path.

Getting a new kitten is a lot of fun. It also takes a lot of work to provide your feline friend with the care and attention they need to thrive. Here are five steps you can take to set yourself up for success.

1. Do your research

There are several decisions you’ll need to make about your kitten’s care. Take some time to look into the following:

  • Nutrition. There are a lot of options to choose from. Dig into the different types of food (wet, dry, fresh, etc.) and identify reputable brands.
  • Pet insurance and wellness plans. Though not mandatory, insurance and wellness plans can be a good way to manage healthcare costs. See what packages meet your needs and fit your budget.
  • Veterinary care. Read reviews and ask friends for recommendations in your local area. It’s also a good idea to see what emergency care options are available.

2. Go shopping

Before you bring your kitten home, stock up on essentials like food, toys, litter box and litter, and grooming supplies.

3. Prepare your home

Kittens can get in to just about everything. Assess your home through kitten eyes and remove or secure anything that could be hazardous. You’ll also want to make sure your kitten has access to safe, quiet places where they can relax.

4. Provide enrichment

In order to grow into a well-adjusted adult cats, kittens need exercise, mental stimulation, and socialization. Have regular play sessions, offer puzzle toys, and make time each day to get your kitten used to new sights, sounds, and situations.

5. Partner with a veterinarian

Get an introductory appointment with a veterinarian on the books. Your vet is your best resource for your kittens initial preventive care and for their life-long healthcare planning.
